Metrorail, colloquially called the Metro, is the heavy rail rapid transit system of Miami City and Miami-Dade County, Florida. Metrorail is the only mass transit system in Florida and it is operated by Miami-Dade Transit (MDT), a departmental agency of Miami-Dade County. In 2005 Miami-Dade decided to replace their existing fleet, launching an international Design tender among the most prestigious Designers and manufacturer in the world.

Vernacchia Design with Finmeccanica AB were awarded the contract with the innovative design proposal ‘Spoon’ (see the particular concave shape of the aerodynamic front-end).
