March 30th 2006. ‘Miami Today’ announces officially that the international Tender for the new Metro Train of Miami is awarded to Finmeccanica-AnsaldoBreda; the Design solution is by ‘Vernacchia Design’ Italy. Vernacchia Design gains the first place because they created the most innovative and futuristic design. The other competitors were: Giugiaro Design for Alstom (France) and Design Studio Bombardier (Canada), Design Studio Caf (Spain). Miami-Dade County commissioners give Miami-Dade Transit the formal go-ahead to award AnsaldoBreda the $289.8 M contract to supply a fleet of 136 Metrorail Train-sets to replace the current bud stock on the Miami Metro Network. The new Miami Metrotrain shows 'a futuristic exterior and an elegant interior design,' with a wide range of services on-board: air-conditioning, bicycle racks, wi-fi, LED lighting, CCTV, digital information and advertising displays. Metro Miami is scheduled to enter passenger service in 2008, with production to be completed in the first half of 2010.
